Design For America is a new student initiative that was started at Northwestern University in February 2009. Design provides a platform for students from all academic backgrounds to collaborate in order to solve local social problems. We have tackled problems from hand hygiene in hospitals, to reducing disposable water bottle use, to improving mass transit, all on the local level: the impact is visible, the impact is inspiring. Every hour we spend observing, every idea we brainstorm, and every solution we implement, makes our movement stronger. In a year, we have grown from 6 students on one campus to over 200 students on thee campuses, and every project we complete inspires more to take up the Grand Challenges of our generation.
