Abstract
The development and exploitation of solar energy has made a positive impact on society throughout history and offers the possibility of an abundant and affordable energy source for the future. Much of the current engineering work focuses on the applications of solar energy for developed countries. However, I feel a general responsibility and personal motivation to help exploit solar energy for underdeveloped countries. This story relates the work done by myself, a member of the Lost Cost-Big Green design team in developing a low-cost, easy to manufacture solar water heater for use in the Dominican Republic, describing the personal experiences of the team, including discussing the project with engineers from a global water heater manufacturer and a trip to the Dominican Republic. The paper briefly discusses the results of the project thus far.
