Abstract
The problem of sustainability - how to provide as much or more to future generations - cannot be tackled without a shared understanding of our common resources. Sourcemap.org is a platform for sharing the story behind products, including what they are made of, where they come from, and what their environmental impact could be. This powerful free and open-source web tool empowers consumers, students, designers and professionals to make informed choices whether shopping for groceries, planning a meeting or designing a product. The open-source platform makes it possible to share in-depth strategies for sustainable design through web-based social networks. Easy-to-use carbon footprint calculators and map-based visualizations extend the practice of supply chain transparency to the general public. In the five months since launch, Sourcemap has gathered thousands of users and hundreds of supply chains, and we are partnering with schools, governments and large industries to make it possible to know more about the products and services we buy.
